Hassan Hanafi Haji, who used to arrange for media briefings by the insurgents in the capital, was shot in Mogadishu following his recent sentence by the country’s military court. At least 18 Somali journalists were killed past year, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
In an interview aired on Somalia state TV in February, Hanafi admitted ordering the murder of several journalists.
His allegiance to al-Shabab went public after he continuously broke news about the group and eventually split off to join its propaganda station, Radio Andalus. Mohamed was the 38th journalist killed doing his job in the country since 2010, the group said.
In 2014, a suicide bomber attacked a restaurant in Baidoa popular with local officials and journalists, killing 15 people.

Hanafi was accused of helping fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked group identify possible targets in the journalism community between 2007 and 2011. “You will see if killings will stop even after my death”.
