Car sales up 9.53%, passenger vehicles up 16.68% in August
The sales of passenger vehicles (which includes passenger cars, vans and utility vehicles) in August stood at 2.59 lakh units as against 2.22 lakh units in the same month past year. Looking at what is happening and after speaking to our members, it is now felt that the growth will be higher.

Local sales of passenger vehicles showed a strong increase in August, reflecting steady growth in urban consumer spending in the economy.
Product-wise, scooter sales in the month under review grew by 32.92 per cent to 567,782 units, whereas the motorcycle sub-segment sales, logged a growth of 22.19 per cent to 1,005,666 units.
Passenger vehicle sales were also up more than 9 per cent to around 1.782 lakh units, against 1.62 lakh units in August a year ago. “We should be hitting around 10-12 per cent”, Sugato Sen, Deputy Director General, SIAM, said here on Thursday.
Data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed that passenger vehicle sales jumped by 16.7 percent in August compared to the same month previous year, with automakers selling 2,58,722 units in August.
The demand for PVs has been driven by new models, especially in the SUV/ UV category, with Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Creta and Mahindra KUV100, TUV300 clocking good sales.
Overall, sales of two-wheelers, which include scooters, motorcycles and mopeds, also grew exponentially.
Director General Vishnu Mathur told reporters in New Delhi that the coming months are expected to be the best ever on extremely euphoric consumer sentiments.
Sales of commercial vehicles rose by 1.53 per cent to 52,996 units in August, Siam said.
In scooters segment, overall sales zoomed by 32.92 per cent to 5,67,782 units as against 4,27,165 units in the same month past year. It had sold 90,269 cars as against 86,454 units in the same month a year ago, up 4.41 per cent.
Besides, mopeds’ off-take zoomed by 36.83 per cent to 75,435 units.

Total automobile sales in August were higher by 23.72 per cent to 2,010,794 units.
