41NBC quotes Scharschmidt as saying the elderly OH woman was leaving the concert at the time and was in a hurry, as someone was waiting to take her parking space in a parking lot shared by Parma Heights fire and police headquarters.
The parking lot is also the parking lot for the Parma Heights Police Department. He said there was a police officer inside the premises, who heard people screaming and went out the front door to see what was happening. He said the driver was backing out and instead of hitting the brake she hit the gas because she was trying to hurry. He said she drove onto the dance floor, hitting eight people then struck a telephone pole and a vehicle as she tried to correct herself.
Six people were taken to area hospitals, two of them with serious injuries. Three were treated and released from a hospital.
Parma Heights Police say they can not rule out charges against the driver at this point and will continue to investigate.
There were more than 100 people at the Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin summer band tribute concert, the last of a series of outdoor community concerts this summer.
Eight people were hit, Scharschmidt said. Fontaine said in his post that this was an “unforeseen and unintentional” occurrence, an accident that can happen “in the blink of an eye”.
Charges have not been filed.
