Cardale Jones wants to show NFL he’s more than a raw talent

“A good day”, coach Urban Meyer said to open his post-practice conference.

Jones took the first snap during live drills, but he and Barrett shared the repetitions with the starters.

Regardless of who opened camp behind the center, Meyer is committing to giving both Jones and Barrett the same amount of reps. “Because friend or not, you want to compete with whoever”.

Barrett, for the record, will take the first snap today. At this presser, Meyer discussed the freshman and what he expects from them. Jones is a junior in his fifth season out of high school while Barrett is a third-year sophomore.

“The main thing is that we want the best for this team, and I said that whether that be myself, Cardale or (redshirt senior) Braxton (Miller), when he was playing (quarterback), it was who is going to put our position in the best chance to win”, he said. “I think in the 28, 29 practices we’re going to have going into the first game, there will be a frontrunner”. “I’ve got to force it, ‘” Barrett said.

Barrett said he is not peering over his shoulder, braced for the competition by his duel with Jones for the backup job throughout the spring and much of training camp a year ago.

“Back in the spring of 2014, I was anxious about extra stuff where if [Cardale Jones] made a good play then I was like ‘wow, I’ve got to do this”, he said.

As there always are this time of year, there are rumors that the Pac-12 might have a title contender in Southern Cal. Either Florida State or Georgia Tech might advance to the football’s final four out of the ACC. Baylor, Oklahoma and TCU may all make a case for the fortunate four, at least until they beat each other head to head. J.T. has played a lot of football. Had he been healthy for the entire campaign, he would have entered the NFL draft, but is now a wide receiver on the team.

We won’t announce anything until the first guy takes the field against Virginia Tech.

Via Fox Sports, here’s Meyer speaking on the quarterback issue, including a quick zinger about Jones being in his “eighth year here”. “But it got awkward, so I just sat there”. “His command of the Buckeyes offense and leadership skills will be the difference – although OSU will blow out so many teams that Urban Meyer will be able to get Cardale Jones plenty of game action”, Feldman wrote.
