Cardinals dominance of the Brewers continues

Leake threw 83 pitches, 53 for strikes, scattered five hits, surrendered two earned runs in fanning four and walking just one over his six full innings of work. Jeremy Jeffress gave up a solo home run, but retired the final three for his 13th save.

The Brewers scored two runs in the first off Jaime Garcia (4-5) and added insurance with Martin Maldonado’s solo homer in the sixth of Matt Bowman. He is coming off of a solid 6-2 victory at Washington, allowing those two runs in seven innings. St. Louis has won 10 consecutive series with Milwaukee at Miller Park, where it has won 30 of its last 40 games…. The veteran outfielder is on an 8-for-12 tear and owns a. 357 average against Wily Peralta (3-5, 6.62), who seeks to build off a promising last outing and end a five-start losing streak against St. Louis (27-25).

Jonathan Lucroy got one of the runs back when he led off the Brewers’ second with a home run to left-center off Mike Leake.

“It’s just one of those where he just had trouble finding the feel on a consistent basis”, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. But Holliday struck again in the fifth, again on a run-scoring single that scored Matt Carpenter and Peralta gave way to a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the inning. “Three runs after five innings, that’s not what you want but we were still in that game”. His Game Score of 85 is the highest by a Brewers starter this season.

Martinez had more than enough support against a team that he has dominated through his four-year career, including a 0.59 ERA in three starts in 2015. Braun returned Tuesday after missing two games with neck stiffness, contributing an RBI double.

Martinez, flashing all the variety and verve of his pitching style, blanked Milwaukee on five singles for eight innings, striking out eight as the Cardinals rolled to a 6-0 Memorial Day victory. St. Louis does have some very solid pieces in place still and a respectable rotation but they don’t seem to have the same swagger we have come to expect over the years and they could very well miss out on the playoffs altogether this season if they can’t go on a run soon. The Brewers next travel to face the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday evening with coverage beginning at 5:30pm on 1150-WHBY.

The Cards’ series with the Brewers lasts a total of three games, finishing up on Wednesday, June 1.
