ST. LOUIS – Suddenly, the St. Louis Cardinals have hit a rough patch.
It was the first homer for a Padre pitcher since Ian Kennedy went deep previous year against Miami, and the first opposite-field blast by a San Diego hurler since Andy Benes did it on September 3, 1989 against Philadelphia.
The anomaly? That nine-strikeout, complete-game effort in which he issued just one free pass.
The 5-6-7-8 hitters combined for two walks and an RBI against the Padres.
Venable connected on the first pitch from Carlos Villanueva (3-3) after the Padres successfully challenged a fair-foul ruling that resulted in a ground-rule double by Clint Barmes.
“I’ve been saying it all year long”. “We’re not losing games, teams are playing well and beating us”.
The Cardinals wasted a chance with runners at the corners in the eighth, and the Padres did the same in the ninth when Trevor Rosenthal fanned Melvin Upton Jr.to end the inning.
A year removed from his first career All-Star selection, Ross continues to tease. Jh.Peralta singled to center, M.Carpenter to second. They’ve been taxed physically and mentally lately with the last four games and five of the last six including lengthy rain delays or extra innings, with Thursday’s loss five minutes shy of four hours.
Defensive Play of the Game, Yadier Molina takes the honors with a bullet of precision, from a kneeling position, to 2B Kolten Wong to retire Matt Kemp’s attempt to steal. “You’ve got a job to do and that’s it, that’s all there is”.
Despite ceding the lead when he allowed an RBI single to third baseman Matt Carpenter and a run-scoring double to right fielder Jason Heyward in the Cardinals’ half of the inning, Ross still lasted six innings.
“I definitely felt better just leading up to the game and I felt a little bit more at ease”, Cooney said. “Happy it fell in”. Rookie Tim Cooney, who made his debut with St. Louis, April 30, was recalled from Memphis Triple-A to made the start against the Padres. San Diego 3B Yangervis Solarte, who homered in the second was tossed after the top of the sixth by home plate umpire Bob Davidson for slamming his helmet after Rackley called him out on a checked swing…. Cardinals Jaime Garcia is scheduled to return for his start, from a groin cramp, to start against the Pirates, Sunday, July 12. St. Louis enters the series after being swept in a two-game set by the Chicago White Sox in which it scored a total of two runs.

1 run, 1 hit, 1 error, 0 left on. Padres right-hander Tyson Ross gave up four hits and three runs in six innings, walking five and striking out six.
