Cardinals place Wacha on 15-day DL with shoulder injury

According to a statement released by the club on Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals have placed starting pitcher Michael Wacha on the 15-day disabled list.

To make room for Reyes, catcher Brayan Pena (left knee) was transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. He had made his 23rd start of the season just last night with apparently no issues.

However, he’s coming off his most impressive start of the year, striking out eight and allowing one run over six innings of work.

Reyes, 21, has always been considered the Cardinals’ top pitching prospect in a group that’s included Marco Gonzales and Luke Weaver.

The 6-3, 175-pound Reyes, who was signed out of Elizabeth (N.J.) High School, is of Dominican descent and last month started for the World Team at the MLB Futures Game in San Diego during All-Star Week.

Wacha, who is 7-7 with a 4.45 ERA this season, received a no-decision Monday in the Cardinals; dramatic 5-4 victory over Cincinnati.

Wacha will hit the shelf with shoulder inflammation and the Cardinals have responded by purchasing the contract of Reyes, 21, who was the Cardinals minor league pitcher of the year in 2015.
