Adams was scratched from the Cardinals’ lineup before Wednesday’s game against Cincinnati with left shoulder inflammation.

On the other hand, the 24-year-old Grichuk has wavered between St. Louis and Triple-A Memphis all season long.

Over 293 big-league plate appearances this year, Grichuk is hitting.216/280/.414 with 12 homers.

The series opens at Wrigley Field in Chicago Thursday night.

Adams has seen similarly limited playing time, but has hit.249 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs. He was doing some of his best work off the bench, where he is batting.385 with two home runs as a pinch-hitter. He has had two stints at Memphis in 2016 (June 18-July 5 and August 2-10), batting.250 with a double, triple and home run in eight games played during his most recent tour.

St. Louis Cardinals Randal Grichuk claps as he reaches second base with a RBI double in the fourth inning against the Miami Marlins at Busch Stadium in St. Louis
