Gyorko homered for the fifth straight game off San Diego pitching, connecting twice with all three RBI in a 3-2 victory that gave the St. Louis Cardinals a doubleheader sweep Wednesday night.
Andrew Cashner turned in a great outing (and potentially increased his trade value), Yangervis Solarte provided a solo shot, and San Diego was about to head to Washington, D.C. on a good note. The Padres, who came into this series high off a sweep of the Giants, will now try to avoid getting swept themselves after dropping each of their first three games in St. Louis. But he is coming off one of his best starts this year, a six-inning performance against the Giants, whom he kept to one earned run on four hits while striking out nine batters and walking none. Padres former teammate, Jedd Gyorko, has had four home runs for six RBI in the three games. But, Cashner has not faced Jedd Gyorko.
Wainwright’s recent return to the form that made him one of baseball’s top starters in recent years should pose a threat to the Padres’ 18-game home run streak, the National League’s longest since Cincinnati did it in 2010. Travis Jankowski ripped a two out double into the left field corner to score Ramirez but was thrown out to end the inning in an attempt to stretch the hit into a triple. In April he gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk, and was tagged with the loss. The ball appeared to strike Holliday’s helmet and then glance off his nose. The team classified the injury as an “abrasion to the nose and upper lip”, and listed their veteran outfielder as day-to-day. His replacement in left field, Jeremy Hazelbaker, dropped a fly ball in the following half-inning that led to a San Diego run.
Padres: INF Brett Wallace was reinstated from paternity leave on Thursday. He is expected back sometime within the next two weeks.
