But if you think it’s odd that a set of film festivals kicks off the awards show season, then we’d direct you to the Gotham Awards in late November.
The Hollywood Film Awards winners are announced in advance and are not televised, but prominently features movies not on general release and are a reasonable indicator of what will be on offer during awards season.
Mulligan was given the Hollywood Actress Award for her role in Suffragette and Smith took home the Hollywood Actor Award for his portrayal of a doctor in new film Concussion, about the discovery of brain trauma in a professional American football player.
Jane Fonda was given the Hollywood Supporting Actress prize for her role in new film Youth and Benicio Del Toro took the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award for drugs thriller Sicario.
Between now and the Academy Awards in February, so many awards are dished out that it’s hard to know which ones are actually good Oscar predictors.
Carey Mulligan, who studied at Woldingham School, is nominated for Best Actress for her part in Suffragette while East Sheen’s Tom Hardy is up for the Best Actor gong for his dual roles as both Kray twins in Legend. The Swedish actress Alicia Vikander was adjudged the Hollywood Breakout Actress award for The Danish Girl.
However, as one might assume, it’s still early in the awards season. That’s the reason there can be such a pile-up of awards season hopefuls on, for example, Christmas Day – those in Hollywood presumably believe voters will remember most the movie they just saw.

There will be many movie awards season which will give the actors more awards in the Hollywood Film Awards and there also will be honoring performances for the upcoming and earlier films. “The Artist” in 2011, is also one of the lowest-grossing winners, as is 2013’s “12 Years a Slave”.
