Instead, the team as a whole showcases just how far the growth of hockey across the world has come since the Canada Cup days.

No matter what, this year’s World Cup promises some thrilling games and rivalries that will hold over die-hard hockey fans for the last month until the NHL season kicks up again. Aside from the format, not much has really changed.
Today our most intense rivalry is against the United States and Canada finds itself in the same World Cup pool as the Americans. Both Crawford and Holtby only saw half a game of pre-tournament action as Canada was trying to get Price ready. That being said, the margin for error in this tournament is incredibly slim. The 2014 Sochi Olympic silver medalists split a two-game series against Finland before dropping an ugly 6-2 loss to Team Europe. It will face the Czech Republic, a country that has gradually faded away in worldwide play, to the extent it is usually cast as the sixth-best team in a sport in which there are often only six realistic medal contenders.
Team’s roster includes player from Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Slovenia, Austria, Norway, Switzerland and Slovakia.
The top two finishers from each group advance to the semifinals on September 24 and 25, with the winners meeting in a best-of-three final commencing September 27.
In the event of a two-way tie, the victor of the head-to-head matchup between those teams advance. “It’s up to you guys, the talk of who’s going to win, who’s going to be in this position”. This is a roster of Canadian players that, as a group, have become this country’s golden generation, and they largely only know winning at best-on-best events. The semifinal winners play a best-of-three final. The first to two wins is crowned the World Cup champion.
Team Sweden’s top end talent is comparable with any in the tournament.
Canada is the overwhelming favorite. The lone question was the 29-year-old’s readiness after a long layoff. The home team looks to be in good shape to extend their global dominance. Limited to just 45 games last season after breaking his collarbone, McDavid was one of just four players to average more than a point per game (Kane, Pittsburgh Penguin and Team Canada center Sidney Crosby and Dallas Star Jamie Benn were the others). “If they can tighten up, they’ve definitely got a shot in this tournament”. With Kane, Quick, Zach Parise, Ryan Suter and captain Joe Pavelski among those back for another crack, the realization is setting in that this World Cup of Hockey is the Americans’ best and perhaps last chance to win an global championship.
The USA will be a part of Group A in the tournament, joining Canada, Europe and the Czech Republic.
The team declined to say Friday whether Neuvirth or Petr Mrazek of the Detroit Red Wings would start against the Canadians. The Yanks don’t seem to be loaded with talent or speed, but there is a commitment, in the words of Ryan McDonagh, “To be the hardest team in the tournament to play against”. “We want to cement our own legacy, like they did”. Goaltending is a big concern as well. “You’re making history when you play against them”. But due to their defense and the experienced goaltending of Henrik Lundqvist, they remain favorites to win Group B and threaten for the tournament title. “You can think about that pressure, you can do whatever you want with it, but it comes down to this tournament for us and this tournament only”.

Russia: Boasting one of the scariest collections of forwards in this tournament, Russia remains a big threat to challenge for the title. All these players will still have a full National Hockey League season ahead of them, and getting hurt while playing a big preseason grudge match against “Team Europe” does not help anyone. They outshot the two teams (playing the Americans twice) by a combined 129-74, including 99-52 at even-strength. “We know they’re going to have a great team”.
