Shocking images show the moment a cargo plane smashed through a fence and onto a road in northern Italy after overshooting the runway.

The two-person crew of the aircraft was unharmed and there were no injuries on the ground, ENAC said in a statement.

The plane landed at 4.07am after a flight from the Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, France.

Fortunately, the incident at Bergamo Airport, also known as Orio Al Serio, happened at around 4am and there were very few cars present.

Although the airport is open, ENAC said travelers flying through should contact the airlines to make sure their flights are operating.

Astonishing snaps show the nose of the Boeing 737-400 embedded in motorway barriers after leaving the runway at Bergamo Airport.

Marco Mauri Pude tweeted pictures as he passed the plane writing: “Incident at the Orio al Serio airport!”
