There is a time and place for placid, dry intonation (Rihanna’s “Umbrella” wouldn’t have sounded the same without those dry “ellas” trailing out the backend of the chorus) but it is not here, leaving Jepsen to sing only in obligation tones, robbing the song of the emotional grounding she needs to drive the point home.
