Carly Rae Jepsen plots next act with help from Tom Hanks

Need proof? Just take “Boy Problems”, co-written by Sia and produced by pop music wunderkid Greg Kurstin, which features those rubbery ’80s synths, shiny rhythm guitar strums, and a chorus that questions whether or not the narrator just broke up with her boyfriend. There is a time and place for placid, dry intonation (Rihanna’s “Umbrella” wouldn’t have sounded the same without those dry “ellas” trailing out the backend of the chorus) but it is not here, leaving Jepsen to sing only in obligation tones, robbing the song of the emotional grounding she needs to drive the point home.

Chatting down the line from Los Angeles where she’s in the middle of a whirlwind promotional tour, Jepsen talked to Postmedia Network about working with Tom Hanks, making her Saturday Night Live debut, and being in the business for a decade.

“It’s better than being a no-hit wonder”, Blunt sharply responded via Twitter.

Was there any extra pressure following up Kiss, especially with the massive popularity of Call Me Maybe? That was important to me, so that kind of became my passion project… waking up every morning and just writing. Opener “Run Away With Me” sets the tone: “Baby, take me to the feeling”.

JetBlue Airways JBLU, -1.48% New York’s Hometown Airline(TM), today announces an exclusive live performance from multi-platinum, Grammy® nominated singer and songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen. He was totally charming and loveable. You’re nearly a veteran now. Despite its star-studded video, “I Really Like You” peaked at just No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100, while no other song from the album has charted. I think because there was really no Plan B in sight for me, it kind of made Plan A that much more vital. The guy asked me to dinner at the end of it. And I was like, ‘That’s why I got 98 percent.’ Somehow I got a job out of that thing, and all I knew how to make was a screwdriver.

I hope so, actually. The album now has an incredibly high score of 84 on Metacritic, and has been praised as one of the best pop albums of the year (some have even gone as far as to say that it’s the album Taylor Swift wanted to write with 1989). Theatre has been a love of mine since Day 1.

If “Call Me Maybe” began as a guilty pleasure for some, it quickly turned to an out-in-the-open pleasure for many.
