VOD favorites favorites, and past Golden Globe winners, such as Transparent, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards once again claimed high-profile nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
One thing hasn’t changed about the Hollywood Foreign press, comprised of some 70 to 80 reporters from far flung places, which is that they love big movie stars and they love to party with them on their one big night.
Some Globe nominees woke to find themselves with more than they expected. But of course, it’s always more fun to focus on the snubs.
Leonardo DiCaprio, best actor nominee for “The Revenant”: “I am incredibly grateful for their nomination, as well as the recognition they have given to this film and to Alejandro’s (Inarritu’s) vision as its director”.
Sylvester Stallone has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his supporting role in the latest “Rocky ” sequel, “Creed”. So it’s not a clear harbinger for what is to come when the Oscars are announced, but does provide some direction.
Todd Haynes 1950s romance “Carol” landed a leading five nominations. And lead actors Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron have also had some attention. Getting an acting nomination for my role as Daisy in “The Hateful Eight” is a testament to the great Quentin Tarantino and would not have been possible without the cast (especially the one I was handcuffed to, Kurt Russell).
In the feature film category, Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation received a nod for best lead actor in a drama (Idris Elba). His third time in the gig follows three straight years of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts.
Mark Rylance, best supporting actor nominee for “Bridge of Spies” and best actor, limited TV series “Wolf Hall”: “I want to thank the members of the HFPA for nominating my work in both “Bridge of Spies” and “Wolf Hall”. Smith is realizing her biggest career success as the imperious Countess in the the PBS series “Downton Abbey”, the polar opposite of this movie about a homeless woman who lives in her van.
The Big Short, which takes a quirky look at the housing bubble crash that led to the 2008 recession, will contend for best comedy/musical film alongside space adventure The Martian, Melissa McCarthy caper Spy, coming-of-age comedy Trainwreck and Joy, inspired by the story of the Miracle Mop creator.
Steve Jobs, despite its poor box office performance, did receive four nods: Kate Winslet for best actress in a supporting role, Michael Fassbender for best performance by an actor, Aaron Sorkin for best screenplay and best original score.

Carol, Spotlight, The Martian, The Revenant, and Room will probably make out well when the Oscar nominations are announced January 14. The Big Short got a dose of good news, and the Steve Jobs actors have been singled out for their performances since the movie’s release in early October.
