Tied with “The Big Short”, with four nominations was the follow up to “Birdman”, “The Revenant”, by Alejandro Inarritu.
“Room”, based on a mother and her young child held in captivity, also picked up a nomination for Best Motion Picture in a Drama and writer Emma Donoghue got the nod for Best Screenplay in a Drama.
Netflix scored its first Globe in a film category for African war drama “Beasts of No Nation”, which debuted a few months ago simultaneously on Netflix’s streaming service and in a select number of theaters.
According to Vanity Fair, Stallone’s nomination “neatly bookends” his only other Golden Globe nomination in 1977 for the original “Rocky” film.
The Golden Globes are chosen by a group of around 90 journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, rather than members of the film industry. CBS Corp CBS -owned Showtime Networks got both ensemble and individual actor recognition for many of its series including Homeland, Nurse Jackie, The Affair, Penny Dreadful, and Shameless.
Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Steve Carell for “The Big Short”, Al Pacino for “Danny Collins”, Mark Ruffalo for “Infinitely Polar Bear” and Christian Bale for “The Big Short”.
“Carol” is up for greatest drama towards Pioneer-period film “The Revenant”, psychological thriller “Room”, Catholic Church abuse probe “Spotlight” and thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road”, a shock contender in the class, which not often sees a blockbuster motion nominee.
When it was announced that the Mad Max franchise was being revitalized, nobody could have imagined how successful it would be.
Will Smith, whose upcoming Concussion has drawn headlines for its depiction of head trauma in football, joined the nominees for best actor in a drama. Apparently displaced was Johnny Depp’s chilly Whitey Bulger in Black Mass.
The Golden Globe television nominations aren’t considered as important, which is hammered in by the location of the nominees who always sit behind the movie stars during the awards show. Rylance added a second for his TV role on the costume drama Wolf Hall. She was also nominated for lead actress in a musical or comedy for 1978’s “The Late Show” and for 1984’s “All of Me”. Both were nominated for best actress in a comedy, and their films – Spy and Trainwreck, respectively – will compete for best comedic film.
– “I will be celebrating the best way I know how, which is to get a nice hug from my family and go off and shoot a movie”.
As for older male actors, terrific performances by Sam Elliott as a spurned lover in “Grandma” and Michael Caine as an acclaimed composer reflecting back on his life in “Youth” were also overlooked.

– “Maybe it will help me get paid a little better. And it was very good”. The nominations were announced Thursday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which will name the winners at a ceremony on January 10. He’s been nominated 17 times over the last 43 years, winning four times and also earning the non-competitive Cecil B. DeMille Award.
