Carol, the Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara-starring film about a taboo love affair in the 1950s was nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama, and both key actresses in the film will battle it out for Best Actress In A Motion Picture, Drama. Other best picture nominees include “Mad Max: Fury Road”, as well as “Room”, “The Revenant”, and “Spotlight”. So they’ve found a way to bring them there, even nominating Damon and Lawrence as best actor and best actress, Comedy Or Musical – for performances that spend a lot more time on weepy resolve and steely competence, respectively.

For the Best Screenplay – Motion Picture award, Emma Donoghue (“Room”), Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer (“Spotlight”), Charles Randolph and Adam Mckay (“The Big Short”), Aaron Sorkin (“Steve Jobs”) and Quentin Tarantino (“The Hateful Eight”) are in a face-off.

Bryan Cranston also scored a nomination for his role as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in Trumbo, as did Michael Fassbender for is turn as the lead in Steve Jobs, and Will Smith for his role as a doctor in Concussion. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best animated film on Thurs… Ditto for Mozart, which edged out both a totally snubbed Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and candidates like Master of None for Best TV Series, Comedy, as lead Gael García Bernal got a nod for Best Actor in a TV Series, Comedy.

In the category for best actress in a drama, apart from Blanchett and Mara, Brie Larson was nominated for her portrayal of a mother held captive with her young son in Room, and Alicia Vikander earned a nod for her role alongside Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl, a film about transgender pioneer Lili Elbe.

Australian film director George Miller has also been nominated for best director for Mad Max. Amazon Originals garnered five nominations, and though Hulu just got just the one nomination, it still beat out NBC, which got no nominations at all this year and is the network on which the Golden Globes 2016 awards ceremony is broadcast.

Otherwise, there weren’t as many surprising inclusions in the Globes’ movie categories as there were in its TV categories – save for the questionable performance of Lady Gaga getting a nod for “American Horror Story”.

There were a couple of notable absences in the dramatic acting lists, too – namely no love for “House of Cards'” leading man Kevin Spacey or Golden Globes’ frequent favorite Edie Falco, whose stunning finale season on “Nurse Jackie” seemingly made her a shoo-in. Now she’s up for supporting actress in a series, limited series or TV movie, though there’s some tough competition against Maura Tierney in “The Affair” and Uzo Aduba in “Orange is the New Black”.
