Carolina Panthers’ bid for perfect season ends with loss to Atlanta Falcons
No scene better depicted how the Carolina Panthers immediately felt on Sunday after seeing their run at a flawless season – not to mention their NFL-best 18-game regular-season win streak – come to a crashing halt with a 20-13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Adrian Clayborn recovered for the Falcons, wrapping up Atlanta’s stunning Week 16 win.

“That’s unacceptable, particularly at this time of the year”, Newton said.
Newton said coach Ron Rivera said the team played as if it was waiting for a turnaround that never came.
Brandon Weeden found a good time to score his first rushing touchdown, throwing 15 passes for 200 yards and another two touchdowns to help the Houston Texans to a crushing 34-6 win over the Tennessee Titans, taking a big step towards clinching the AFC South title.
Newton threw for 142 yards and ran for 46 yards and a score for the 14-1 Panthers.
The dynamic Steelers offense could only muster 17 points against a Ravens defense that entered Sunday’s action ranked 25th in the National Football League is scoring, yielding 25.7 points per game.
Late in the third quarter with the Panthers leading 10-7, Matt Ryan scrambled to his left while avoiding a rush (we’d be remiss not to mention how tough Ryan proved to be on Sunday in what has been a rough season for the eighth-year pro) on a critical third-down play and let it fly. “There were some plays where that we left out there, we knew it. Yet, we know what we’re capable of… we’ve put ourselves in this situation where we can use this as fuel to the fire”. Ryan completed 23 of 30 passes for 306 yards with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones.
Now 14-1 with a home game to go against Tampa Bay, the Panthers and their likely MVP quarterback Cam Newton can still guarantee home-field advantage until the Super Bowl by besting the Buccaneers. The Seahawks travel to Arizona next Sunday to take on the 13-2 Cardinals in a game in which they’ll likely be underdogs. The Jets (10-5) will reach the playoffs if they beat Buffalo next week.
That’s why Newton was able to get out of the funk he was in immediately after the game and put a positive spin moving forward. And then, Ryan Fitzpatrick hit Decker on a fade behind Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler for New York’s fifth straight victory. The Atlanta Falcons won 20-13.
The victory along with Pittsburgh’s loss to Baltimore assured the Chiefs of a spot in the AFC playoffs, their second postseason berth in three seasons under head coach Andy Reid. Atlanta wide receiver and special teams standout Eric Weems was taken to the locker room in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. “But you see, they didn’t handle themselves with class the first time we played [when Carolina won 38-0]”.
But if Atlanta, still a pedestrian 8-7, can do this to the Panthers, how many playoff-bound teams could do the same? He split one with linebacker Thomas Davis two weeks ago against Atlanta.
With Peterson relaxing on the sideline, Jerick McKinnon rushed for two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 68-yard romp through a disinterested defense with the temperature down to 11 degrees.
The touchdown catch in the third quarter compares with the best of Jones’ career highlights.
