Performing at Ryman Auditorium he said “This song is for a friend of mine who died this afternoon, her name is Caroline”.
The 52-year-old’s brother Patrick added his own moving tributes to the fearlessly amusing woman.
Fans of The Royle Family will immediately recognise this tune as the theme song to the hit British sitcom.
Ricky told the Sunday Mirror: “I’m so bloody shocked. A true comedy genius, her work was equally amusing & touching”.
Chester born comedian Jeff Green tweeted: “Caroline Aherne, funniest, down to earth, cleverest, most complicated comedian I’ve ever known”. She must have gone through a lot but I never saw her looking unwell.
The 76-year-old added: ‘She never talked about her health, ever.
Tributes have poured in for the writer, actress and comedienne from across the showbiz world. What a sad, sad day.
These characters were duly introduced to us in the halcyon days of comedy in Manchester, particularly the infamous Buzz club, then working together with Steve Coogan on The Dead Good Show.
He continued: ‘A character. A sister, real and (for me), fake. A boss. A writer. An actor. A genius. A friend. Big, big heart. “Her death is a reminder how much she and her writing were, and still are, the exception”, he said. “She was one of those people who – without being attention seeking – always, always amusing, even when you weren’t filming”, Fast Show co-star Weir told the BBC. “Vulnerable and complex and damaged but. lovely”. Her extraordinary work will be cherished by future generations’. So gifted.” “Little Britain” star David Walliams added: “Absolutely devastating news about Caroline Aherne. She was a giant of British comedy and acting, a superb observational comedian and writer and a very complex and lovely human being. And if they worked late, there might be 30 on the set and she would send out for 30 takeaways.
“She never lost her sense of humour though, she was always laughing and joking”.
Tell us what you think below? A multitude more came on The Fast Show, in which we shared the joy of the memorable Roy and “What did I say, Roy?”
She suffered a bout of bladder cancer and, in 2014, started treatment for lung cancer.
Caroline Aherne has spoken of her personal fight against cancer.
“The family ask for privacy at this very sad time”, said publicist Reading.
He later wrote, “Thing is, amidst all sadness Caroline would now say something grounded, incisive, and hilarious”. The Royle Family is one of the greatest British comedies.
John Thomson, Aherne’s co-star on The Fast Show, said his friend had “raw talent” and “no agenda”. Gogglebox will never be the same’.
