Carson pushes back against questions over his background

It’s unlikely Carson will again shrink into the background Tuesday when the eight leading GOP candidates meet in Milwaukee for their fourth debate.

“The fact is, you know, we wish the media would be just as obsessed with Hillary Clinton’s lies over the years”, Priebus said in an interview on NBC’s “Today” show.

“I don’t remember the names of the people, ” Carson said.

Ben Carson’s presidential campaign is parodying recent media scrutiny of his past.

“We should vet all candidates”.

He continued, “I have no problem with being vetted”. “People who know me know I’m an honest person”.

Carson appears to have missed the nine hours during which Clinton was grilled, and after which nothing was uncovered by the Republican-led Benghazi Committee. Doubts have also been raised about Carson’s claim that he was offered a full scholarship to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The next day, Politico published a story reporting that the Carson campaign admitted that he “fabricated” an account of applying and being admitted to West Point – a headline the outlet later softened.

Now viewed as a front-runner for the Republican nomination, Carson faces intense scrutiny, and that scrutiny should be evident by his counterparts on the platform this evening.

Buzzfeed News said that its reporters had spoken to “more than a dozen people” on the Record masthead in 1969 and only Bakal could remember the prank.

Because of Cavuto’s phrasing, Carson could legitimately say that he didn’t give a direct answer because he wasn’t given a direct question.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: How frustrated are they [the Trump campaign] with Ben Carson right now? Will you help Dr. Carson fight against the establishment? “I don’t think so”. This is a odd election, isn’t it?

ARMSTRONG WILLIAMS: Good morning, and what you just reported was not true, by the way. “What are we coming to?”

Speaking in front of thousands at a rally in Springfield, IL on Monday evening, Trump sharpened his criticism of Carson in a preview of potential lines of attack. I never saw anything like this. “If you try and hit your mother over the head with a hammer, your poll numbers go up”.

At the same time, Trump has been raising more questions about Carson. Tuesday night did not suggest any exception to that pattern.

No further questions. Even Donald Trump seemed to lay off Carson. “But he doesn’t understand – the race is yet to begin”, he said. He said he could not recall specifically who made the offer, but he pushed back against the idea that he should be able to do so. “If the people like who that is, that’s great but I’m not going to become someone else”.
