Carson Wentz is not a franchise QB, according to Browns executive

There are no long-term plans anymore in the NFL. ♦ That was when Eagles coach Doug Pederson informed the rookie he was going to be the starting quarterback, beginning with the season opener Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

“Sam Bradford was originally kept in Philadelphia because management thought he gave the Eagles the best chance to win”. Cleveland could have easily stayed put and taken Wentz, solidifying the quarterback position for years to come.

We see it every year now.

In 2015, the Browns worked over Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans in a 28-14 win. Teddy Bridgewater and Derek Carr the year before. Joe Flacco (2008 Ravens) and Matt Ryan (2008 Falcons) each won 11 games and went to the playoffs.

These guys aren’t the exception anymore. But that doesn’t mean he’s down on the rookie quarterback. Maybe kids coming out of school are just smarter now.

Rookie quarterbacks have had success in the National Football League in recent years.

“[Wentz] just said, ‘Let’s go, man”.

The last few years, this trend has become even more pronounced. “There just may not be anybody in that year who’s good enough to be a top 20 quarterback in the National Football League”. Jamar Taylor is also a guy that Wentz will need to watch out for. “It’s just going to take some time”, Huff said. You learn by experiencing the speed of the game first-hand. He averaged 45.2 yards with a net of 39.1 during his career with the Broncos and won a Super Bowl last season. The Eagles made that official by naming him the starting quarterback Monday.

It was obvious throughout training camp that Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz was very much prepared to recognize secondary coverages, defensive fronts and all type blitzes.

“Chase was brought in here for a reason”, Pederson said. Reid inserted Donovan McNabb into the lineup after nine games.

The Browns were thrilled that the Eagles did think Wentz was the right fit, because the Eagles sent the Browns two first-round picks, a second-round pick and a third-round pick in the trade that allowed the Eagles to select Wentz with the Browns’ first-round pick, No. 2 overall. Wentz overtook him on the depth chart without even playing, and Daniel continued as the No. 2.

Chase Daniel, who signed a three-year, $21 million contract in the offseason to play behind Bradford and mentor Wentz, remains the backup.

Those veterans are still convinced the Eagles can win with a rookie quarterback whose preseason consisted of just 39 snaps and 24 passes, all of them coming almost four weeks ago.

“As the season go, the defense will be who we always be”, Graham said.

“It’s tough. But here’s the thing, he’s such a special guy that this doesn’t bother him”.

“I think any competitor would be a little disappointed”, Daniel said.

For the sake of long-suffering Eagles fans, hopefully Wentz pans out. There are a lot of moving parts here, a lot of unanswered questions. The Philadelphia Eagles have wasted their future on a non-franchise quarterback!
