Chen has applied to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for her “B” sample to be tested and for a hearing, it added.

Doping has been a major concern in the Rio Games.

Chen Xinyi tested positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide after she finished fourth in the women’s 100-meter butterfly Sunday, missing a bronze medal by nine-hundredths of a second, the Chinese Swimming Association said.

“The CSA resolutely opposes use of banned substances”. The substance is a known to be a diuretic banned for its ability to hide the use of other performance-enhancing drugs.

It added that the CSA had required Chen to cooperate with the investigation.

This prompted fury in China and calls for an apology which have been unsuccessful so far.

The Chinese swimming body said it has “taken this matter seriously and demanded full cooperation from Chen in the investigation”.

In March, the CSA revealed that six Chinese swimmers had tested positive for drugs in the preceding months, including three for hydrochlorothiazide. Miami was told past year that it could no longer admit Sun Yang* to its facilities after he tested positive for a banned substance in 2014.

THREE Olympians – including a reigning champion – were today banned after failing drugs tests. “The only explanation can be food additives that I have been taking”.

Irish boxer Michael O’Reilly and Greek swimmer Theodora Gianeni have also withdrawn from the Games after being notified of failures on arrival in Rio, along with two weightlifters, Cyprus’ Antonis Mastasdis and Poland’s Tomasz Zelinski. Ethiopia’s 10,000m star Tirunesh Dibaba, 31, will become the first woman to win three consecutive golds in an individual athletics event if she retains the crown won in London four years ago.

Norandrosterone is one of the most popular steroids detected in failed tests by weightlifters.

The country’s Sports Ministry confirmed no anti-doping tests were carried out between July 1 and July 24, a move described by WADA as “unacceptable”.
