Case of sexually-transmitted Zika in Canada may have been found
The deputy chief medical health officer of Saskatchewan, Dr Denise Werker stated that in this case, a woman contracts the virus after she has sex with a man who has travelled to a country which has a prevalence of Zika.

The Maui County District Health Office and the County of Maui jointly announced a suspected case of Zika virus Thursday.
Werker said she chose to publicly disclose the case because many Canadians are travelling for March break, and should be aware of the risks when visiting countries where Zika virus is prevalent. Exactly how often Zika virus is linked with pregnancy complications is still being studied, Jamieson said. The infection can cause mild illness with symptoms ranging from fever and joint pain to a rash or conjunctivitis that could last sever days to a week.
The CDC’s recommendations come as a response to forecasts that predict that the mosquito-borne disease could reach the United States by July. If a pregnant woman must travel to a Zika-infected area, CDC recommends they talk to their health care provider prior to travel.
A pregnant woman, who had traveled to Central America, also tested positive for the virus in Napa County, officials said.
The guidelines said women diagnosed with Zika should wait at least eight weeks after symptoms began before trying to conceive.
A man infected with Zika virus can spread it to his sexual partners, but it is not known for how long after the infection a man can continue to spread the virus.
Patients usually don’t require hospitalization, and Zika rarely results in death, but it’s very unsafe to pregnant women.
“Couples who do not want to get pregnant should use the most effective contraceptive methods that they can use consistently and correctly, and they should also use condoms to prevent the sexual transmission of Zika”.

The Mississippi State Department of Health is encouraging travelers to take precautions against Zika virus during their trips and after they return home. Wear long sleeves and trousers when outdoors. As NBC San Diego notes, no one in California has yet to contracted the virus through a mosquito bite that occurred in the state.
