Mr Trump has been leading the Republican polls in New Hampshire, which has historically favoured more moderate candidates than Iowa.
Ted Cruz won the caucuses, than he would have believed back when he launched his campaign in June.
New Hampshire is the second in a series of state-by-state nominating contests to decide who will be each party’s candidate for president in November.
Trump finished second to Ted Cruz, despite polls that showed the real estate mogul ahead.
Some commentators suggested backing out of the final televised debate before the poll, the fallout of a row with Fox News host Megyn Kelly, may have hurt Mr Trump’s support in the state. Also, Cruz sent out a voter violation certificate to thousands of voters.

Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler earlier Wednesday denied the campaign had spread the message Carson was dropping out – potentially freeing his supporters to support Cruz in Iowa instead – and had merely told supporters about Carson’s travel plans.
“We need a commander in chief, not a twitterer in chief”, said the Iowa victor. “Only one candidate meets that standard and that is Marco Rubio”.

A victorious Ted Cruz and buoyant Marco Rubio emerged from Iowa with compelling claims to the outsider and mainstream mantles in the fractured Republican primary, as the presidential race shifted overnight to New Hampshire. “I think we have a nice margin, a great relationship up in New Hampshire”.
