Casio’s New Smartwatch Takes Android Wear Into the Rugged Outdoors
The watch features a built-in microphone, is water-resistant up to 50 meters and built to meet USA military standards. Casio says it provides “real-time information about changes in the natural environment and activity levels”. And, with the device being powered by Andorra Wear, users can also load their own apps to expand the device’s capabilities.

There’s a 1.32-inch display on the WSD-F10 and it’s a 320 x 300 affair, complete with a flat-tire like the Moto 360. The concern with the WSD-F10 is that you could run out of battery life if you’re taking part in a multi-day excursion, but at that point you could bring a battery pack or turn on Timepiece Mode to extend your device’s current charge.
The WSD-F10 comes with dedicated applications that measure and display essential information for outdoor activities and sports using a pressure sensor, compass, and accelerometer.
Expect the Casio WSD-F10 Smart Outdoor Watch to arrive later this April for $500 a pop. Over in Japan, it will work in tandem with a released outdoor action camera, although this very Exilim camera has not yet been released Stateside.
When you do decide to courageous the elements, you can use the Casio’s ViewRanger GPS app during your trek to access route info, location data, and navigation guidance, and MyRadar app to track the weather. And while outdoor watches are a niche category, they’re a clearly defined one; they sell to people already willing to strap advanced devices to their wrists, and that’s a demographic that Casio is well placed to address as both a watchmaker and technology company. The wristband is made from soft urethane plastic that conforms to the wrist and can be comfortably worn for extended periods.
The watch also links to the Casio Moment Setter+ smartphone app to give timing and opportunities for activities such as trekking, cycling, and fishing. Users can check forecasts quickly and easily. The feature toggles off smartphone communication and the color LCD to display the time data in only monochrome.
