Cat Introduces First Smartphone with Thermal Imaging
“It can pick up heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet, and see through obscurants such as smoke”. The device is for industrial use and it can survive drops from a height of 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) and under water it can dive to a depth of 5 meters (16.4 feet), for about an hour. It has announced a new flagship smartphone, which combines the ruggedness you might expect from such a company with up-to-date functionality (Android 6.0) as well as an integrated thermal camera made by FLIR. Most of these are commercial activities, though, because thermal-imaging cameras aren’t cheap. A new rugged phone from Cat has a similar camera built in.

The preinstalled Flir app is slightly different from what you’d download if you bought a plug-in thermal imaging sensor. This phone is aimed at people like builders, electricians, emergency services, utility workers or inspectors, so the camera could come in handy to check things like if wires are overheating, to see which pipe has hot water, how well a window is sealed, etc, as pointed out by Gizmodo. The company will showcase the device at MWC 2016 in Barcelona next week.
The Cat S60 features some other tricks. It’s created to take full advantage of the phone’s octa-core processing capabilities and the latest version of Google’s Android software, nicknamed Marshmallow.
The heat sensor is on the back of the phone, just above the 13-megapixel camera.
In addition to being waterproof, the company said the S60 is also dustproof and features a super-bright display, allowing it to be viewed even in strong sunlight.
“The Cat S60 represents a milestone for smartphones”.
CAT will demonstrate the S60 at Mobile World Congress and will make it available later this year for $599 in the US or €649 in the E.U, although this is individual pricing and doesn’t reflect the expected contract arrangements that might occur with larger businesses.

Sure, the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones are slim and stylish, but they can be as delicate as a vase in an antique shop if you’re not careful.
