According to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, officials received reports of a cat with its paw stuck in a sewer cover along the 3500 block of Northwest 39th Street, Thursday afternoon.

The details of the rescue were posted on the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page. When that didn’t work, removed the the sewer cover and took it and the kitten back to the fire station.

“The kitten’s paw was in there up to his shoulder”, BSO deputy Mike Jachles said.

“Whether a lizard or something ran down that little hole and caught the cat’s curiosity, we don’t know”, Jachles said, “We figure he might have been there for as long as 12 hours”.

They weren’t able to remove the heavy grate, so they transported the cat with the grate around its paw to the Imperial Point Animal Hospital, in hopes they could somehow do the honors.

Battalion Chief Jon O’Brien and firefighter Chris Hottz used several types of rescue saws to delicately cut the steel cap from around the kitten’s paw.

Captain did not have any broken bones or major injuries, Jachles said. It is recuperating well while they are trying to see if he has a home, Jachles added.
