Cathay Pacific flight makes emergency landing in Alaska’s Aleutians

The flight departed Hong Kong airport at 12.55pm on Wednesday, and touched down in Alaska at about 21.30pm Hong Kong time, Cathay said in a statement.

CX884 from Hong Kong to Los Angeles today (29JUL) made a precautionary diversion to Shemya military airport near Aleutians Island, Alaska due to smoke detected in aircraft.

Airlines officials say smoke detected in the aircraft caused the Boeing 777 to divert to the Eareckson Air Station on the island of Shemya.

Officials said as of 7 a.m. Wednesday time the Boeing 777 aircraft was safely on the ground and all passengers and crew were safe. There was no immediate response to an email seeking comment from Cathay Pacific or a phone call to Eareckson.

Cathay Pacific is working to obtain additional facts and will provide more information as it becomes available.
