The group said it “may be called upon to assist families who have met the federal criteria of refugee status”.
Communications Coordinator Carol Spruell said the organization occasionally receives threatening calls, but not of this magnitude. That individual has reportedly since relocated to the Washington, DC area.
Speaking at an impromptu press conference Tuesday evening at Catholic Charities, Edmonson denied Vitter’s claims that they do not know his whereabouts. “That is a mischaracterization, that is just simply not true”.
According to officials with the organization, Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge have received threats for helping Syrian refugees resettle in Louisiana.
“In fact, many people agree that this refugee process is the most secure way to allow entry into the United States”, the statement said.
There are no Syrian refugees ready for resettlement in the Baton Rouge area through at least March, charity officials said.
“I think you heard that from the Catholic Charities, David Aguillard says I want to be transparent, I want to find out what I can say because I would like to be able to share that with the State Police”. However, state leaders were not made aware that refugees were in Louisiana until this weekend after watching the news. Two weeks ago, Catholic Charities said publicly it was expecting a few refugees, but was not sure how many or when. Calls to the State Department were not returned today.
“We want to welcome them into our society, we want to integrate them so they are not disaffected”, Salazar said.
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), who is trailing in his campaign to replace Jindal as governor, highlighted the issue Tuesday as he also attacked his Democratic rival, Rep. John Bel Edwards, for supporting a White House plan to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees across the U.S.

In Greg Abbott’s letter to the President, the Governor stated he would be directing the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to not participate in Syrian Refugee relocation.
