Cause of deadly NYC crane collapse under investigation
A pedestrian killed by a collapsing crane was eulogized Sunday as a man of kindness and generosity as the final remnants of the crumpled steel were removed from the street where they fell. Its being known that the crane was being lowered down during the strong winds which came crashing down on the street. His family says he was a mathematical whiz who worked at a computerized trading firm.

“I know that these things happen and so I value my life”, he said.
The mayor said there will be new restrictions on crawler cranes during wind conditions. He said the investigation to determine went wrong when the crane was being lowered is still ongoing. He says the crew had been directing people away from the area as the crane was being moved.
The operator, identified as Galasso Trucking of Queens, was in the process of lowering the crane’s boom “into a secure position because winds were approaching 25 miles per hour”, and as blowing snow fell, officials said.
Nearby buildings were evacuated after the collapse while fire and utility officials checked and rechecked for gas leaks.
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the person who died was sitting in one of the cars that was hit.

A crane bearing the company’s name was overturned at the scene of Friday morning’s collapse.
Still, city officials say, it could have been much worse. “We have to figure out what happened and we have to make sure it doesn’t happen again”, the mayor said.

The employee at Bay Crane said he was a manager but would not give his name when reached by The Associated Press.

A spokesman for the building’s owners said in a statement that they were “saddened by the injuries and loss of a life”. He also recounted seeing many onlookers who were trying to escape someone who was trapped under the crane.
