Cauvery bandh: Stalin, Kanimozhi, Vaiko court arrest

Several farmers’ and traders’ bodies have called for a bandh all over Tamil Nadu on Friday to protest the Cauvery water sharing row.

The Hindu quoted Justice Dipak Misra as saying, “We expect the State governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to maintain their dignity and respect for rule of law”.

Karnataka government had yesterday chose to obey the Supreme Court’s modified order asking it to release 12,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu till September 20 and warned that those indulging in violence during protests against release of water will be dealt with an “iron-hand”. “People can not take law onto themselves and both states have to prevent such actions”, the court said.

Expressing concern over the attacks on Kannadigas in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, early this week, the Karnataka Chief Minister wrote the first letter to Jayalalithaa on Monday.

Tight security has been given to central government offices, railway stations and banks including Karnataka-Tamil Nadu checkpost border near Attibele.

All political parties have extended support to the bandh call in Puducherry and the neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

Siddaramaiah also requested her to issue an advisory to the media to report “responsibly” the incidents relating to the Cauvery agitation as was done by his government.

Meanwhile, the shutdown strike is on in a peaceful way with no untoward incident being reported, while the normally crowded places like bus stands, commercial centres and roads wore a deserted look.

He said the police has not given any permission for pro-Kannada leader Vatal Nagaraj’s party to stage rail roko on Thursday. Though curfew was lifted, officials said prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC will continue until further orders as a precautionary measure. Sporadic protests were witnessed in Mandya, Mysuru, Chitradurga, Ramanagra and other parts yesterday.

State-run transport corporations’ run buses besides Chennai-specific local and MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) trains, and metro rail will function as usual, authorities said. Vignesh said he hoped seeing this would lead to “an uprising of the Tamil community” and a student revolution in the state.
