After an all-party meeting over the Cauvery issue in Bengaluru on Wednesday evening, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said that the state cabinet has chose to defer the releasing of water to Tamil Nadu. “It is an unimplementable order”, he told reporters here.

JDS leader and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said after the all-party meeting that “not even a single drop of water should be released to Tamil Nadu for any reason whatsoever”. If the proposed Board comes into existence, Karnataka will have to forfeit control over the reservoirs in its Cauvery basin, he said. He also said there would be a special session of the state legislature on September 22 on the issue, after which a final decision would be taken.

Addressing the media late on Wednesday night, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the cabinet had chose to call an immediate joint session of both houses on September 23, and not release water until then.

The apex court on Tuesday directed the state to release 6,000 cusecs of water daily from Wednesday for a week till September 27, modifying the order of its constituted Cauvery Supervisory Committee on Monday to release 3,000 cusecs daily for 10 days till September 30 in response to Tamil Nadu’s plea for water for cultivation. “The Karnataka government’s move is a much expected one”. The meeting was attended by leaders of the Congress and the JD (S). BJP boycotted the all-party meet saying that assembly session should be called immediately. The decision came after Siddaramaiah held an all-party meeting to discuss the Supreme Court’s latest order in the matter, in which it directed the state to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from September 21 to September 27, according to PTI. If 6,000 cusecs water is released to Tamil Nadu as directed by the apex court, the State will face acute shortage of drinking water, he added.
