“However, considering the constitutional position of the Supreme Court, wherein defying its directions is not an option, the Cabinet has resolved to release water from tonight”.

Siddaramaiah said the cabinet, after weighing the pros and cons “constitutionally, legally and politically” and keeping in mind the main Special Leave Petition challenging the Cauvery tribunal’s final award coming up on October 18, made a decision to obey the court order.

“This order is the most hard to follow”. “But we have accepted the constitution which spells out the three pillars of the country, the Judiciary, the administration and the executive”.

As the Cauvery unrest kept the country’s IT capital on the boil, the government warned of dealing with an “iron hand” any violence after an emergency cabinet meeting which took stock of the situation and chose to comply with the Apex Court order passed on Monday.

While Karnataka contends that it does not receive its due share of water from the river, Tamil Nadu says that it has come to depend very heavily on the existing pattern of usage of its water and any change in this pattern will adversely affect the livelihood of millions of its farmers.

Karnataka bandh was observed against it on September 9. “Productivity has been hit badly, we haven’t been able to work for the last several days”, said Harshit Mathur, an official of online payment company Razorpay.

Siddaramaiah also said he had sought for an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. VCK Founder and former Lok Sabha member Thol Thirumavalan condemned the indiffernt and adamant attitude of Karnataka on the cauvery issue and expressed regret over Prime Minister Narendra Modi not intervening to restore order in Karnataka, where tamils were subjected to attacks and their buses and lorries were torched.

The state government also said those indulging in violence will be dealt with “iron-hands”, he said and appealed to the people to “maintain peace and tranquility in the state and protect all citizens living here”. The government has chose to maintain law and order with iron fist.

While DMDK Founder and Actor Vijayakanth today said his party would osberve a day long fast to condemn the attacks and torching of Tamil Nadu buses and their properties, and to demand adequateprotection to them.

Stating that the entire problem was result of lack of a national waterpolicy, Mr Siddaramaiah said he would urge the Prime Minister to announce one soon. No one should take law into hands and destroy public property.
