Cauvery dispute: Whose water is this?

A Coimbatore report said establishments remained shut in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris districts, affecting normal life, in response to the bandh call.

The activist belonging to Naam Tamizhar Katchi had suffered over 90 per cent burns and died this morning. Arikichenin Olithselvan, a doctor at the Manipal Hospital in Karnataka, said they had to ditch their ambulance and wheel the 55-year-old man across the border before finding a local ambulance to ferry him on to the hospital where the operation would take place. It led to a protest by DMK leader Kanimozhi who was detained by the police.

A number of political leaders were detained for participating in the bandh.

MDMK leader Vaiko and his party cadre were arrested earlier in Tiruchy after attempting to stage a rail roko.

PR Pandian, President of Cauvery Delta All Farmers Association’s Coordination Committee said a protest will be held at Egmore station in Chennai on Friday.

“The government should have protected people from Tamil Nadu in Karnataka. they must solve the issue once and for all”, Kanimozhi was quoted by NDTV.

Many private schools also declared holiday while majority of auto-rickshaws, taxis and private buses remained off the roads.

According to Livemint, almost 3 lakh lorries will keep off the roads till 6 PM as the lorry owners and drivers will take part in the bandh. VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan was also detained near Basin Bridge in Chennai.

As Vijayakanth is sick, his wife Premalatha Vijayakanth is leading the members of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in a hunger strike, in the party’s headquarters at Koyambedu in Chennai. “The government should stop making such irresponsible statements”, BJP’s General Secretary for Karnataka and former minister C T Ravi said.

They condemned the violence against Tamils in Karnataka and sought protection for them.

He told reporters that his party would support Chief Minister Jayalalithaa if she meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the Cauvery issue. A Puducherry Road Transport Corporation was stoned on Vazhudavoor road, following which it was brought to the shed. “The police will pursue all possible motives for the violence”, Parameshwara had said.

“Bandh has been organised in Tamil Nadu and it is a healthy trend that all the neutral organizations like, lorry owners, education institution and unorganized sectors, neutral sectors have come forward to support the band”.

After the Supreme Court’s verdict in Cauvery water row there had been violent protests in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
