Cauvery protests: TCS, Infosys shut down in Bengaluru; Flipkart operations hit

Earlier in the day, reacting to the ongoing violence in Karnataka over the distribution of waters from Cauvery River to Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it distressful and have urged the people to calm down and find a solution through restrained and mutual dialogue.

The protests erupted after India’s Supreme Court on Monday ordered Karnataka state to divert some water from a river to neighbouring Tamil Nadu state, reigniting a long-simmering dispute in the region about who gets to use the water.

Bus services between the two states have also been suspended, with a Tamil Nadu service owner saying 30 of his vehicles had been torched outside Bangalore.

Police said on Wednesday they had lifted curfews imposed in 16 areas, but officers were still on the streets in large numbers to keep the peace.

Meanwhile one person has died and another received injuries after police opened fire upon protesters in Bengaluru’s Rajgopalnagar area on Monday.

“There are more than 1,000 registered Malaysians, mainly students in Karnataka”, he said, adding that Malaysians residing and travelling there are advised to adhere to local rules and regulations imposed by local authorities to restore law and order, in particular curfew times.

The violence over the issue of sharing Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu forced IT firms such as TCS, Infosys and Wipro to shut their Bengaluru offices on Tuesday. “I have not made or given any statement on this issue”, Simbu said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement: “Violence can not provide a solution to any problem”.

According to ASSOCHAM, widespread loss would accrue to IT and ITES facilities due to poor attendance for the last several days.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are two of India’s top industrial states.

Bengaluru witnessed sporadic incidents of violence including arson and vandalism on Monday after a modified Supreme Court order directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery to Tamil Nadu.

“The inability to implement the 5th Sep judgement is the reason why yesterday’s direction came from the SC.as per the order we’ve released water for six days”.

A hotel promoted by a Kannadiga and some vehicles with Karnataka registration were attacked at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
