Cauvery row: Motorists dropped number plates to escape violence

Vignesh was part of a protest march, where almost 500 cadres of the Naam Tamilar party took part from Pudupet to Egmore in Chennai on Thursday, a day ahead of the Tamil Nadu bandh, to condemn the violence targeting Tamils in Karnataka and to seek a long-term solution for the Cauvery dispute. According to reports, one lakh police personnel were deployed on safety measures and strong protection was provided to Karnataka-based establishments and areas where Kannada-speaking people live.

DMDK leader Vijayakanth and TNCC president S. Thirunavukkarasar extended their support and said their cadre would participate in the agitation. Private schools are closed but most of the government schools will be opened today.

Milk supply too will be hit with private milk suppliers set to join the bandh.

Ruling AIADMK and trade unions affiliated to it have been non-committal on their participation in the bandh.

Since the Centre has not constituted these, “We are in a situation of approaching the Supreme Court to receive our share of water from Cauvery”, she said.

More than 30 Tamil fringe outfits including Tamizhar Desiya Iyyakkam, Makkal Vazhuvurimai Iyakkam and Tamizhaga Makkal Vazhuvurimai Katchi had announced a 12-hour bandh in Puducherry on September 16 to condemn the violence against Tamils in Karnataka.

The Tamilnadu Petrol Bunk Association will support the Bandh and all petrol bunk will be remaining closed from 6.00 AM to 6.00 PM.

“The government is keen that public do not face any inconvenience because of bandh and necessary steps have been evolved. I have issued strict instructions to the law and order machinery to ensure that no such incidents are repeated”.

Normal life in Tamil Nadu was affected on Friday due to a general strike called by different groups representing farmers, traders, transporters and others over the Cauvery water issue.

Pudukkottai (TN): DMK workers holding “Rail Roko” protest over Kalasa Banduri Canal issue detained by police. Earlier on September 5, the apex court had called on the state government to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water.

He hoped that the water would be available in Karaikal in the next couple of days.
