Anger over the judgement escalated after a video of a van driver being beaten up by a fringe group in Tamil Nadu was circulated on Monday.

Protection was being provided for Karnataka-related business establishments, schools, institutions and areas where Kannada speaking people live, including Krishnagiri district.

Convenor of DMK S P Sivakumar said the party pledged support for the bandh in line with the decision taken by the party high command in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, where also a dawn-to-dusk shutdown is being observed tomorrow.

She said the Centre can not “keep away” from the Cauvery issue, adding efforts should have been made earlier to protect Tamil people and their properties in Karnataka.

In Coimbatore, senior leaders of various political parties, including DMK and MDMK and farmers associations were arrested while trying to stage rail roko near railway stations and road blockade. VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan was also detained near Basin Bridge in Chennai. “However, we named these three leading actors because they are more influential than others and they failed to realise that their speech has translated into violence”, his counsel M. Jayabal said.

On Monday, miscreants in the guise of pro-Karnataka activists, took to the streets burning Tamil Nadu registered vehicles and attacking businesses owned by people from that state. Police said that a probe was on in the matter.

Hearing the plea, the Supreme Court then amended its order, directing the state to release a reduced quantum of 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu till September 20.

Chife Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday announced that the Mettur dam would be opened for samba cultivation from September 20. The Chief Minister said this year too, Tamil Nadu government filed an interlocutory petition before the Supreme Court seeking directions to Karnataka to release water.
