“We’ve been asked, ‘Why not all of Miami?'” CDC Director Tom Frieden said during a visit there last week.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito that spreads the virus is common in the tropical countries where Zika is rampant.

Pregnant Brits were advised not to travel to the area after four people in Miami contracted the virus from mosquitoes. A reported 14 individuals have been infected with the Zika virus by local mosquitoes.

Dr. Aileen Marty, professor of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Florida International University, told the Miami Herald that the Zika virus appears to be attracted to stem cells that would otherwise become brain cells.

Delgado explained, “We know that being diagnosed with Zika can be traumatic, especially for a woman who is pregnant, however an adverse fetal diagnosis should not be a death sentence for that baby”. The other billboard is in Homestead, along USA 1.

“It’s a stigma to the area”, Frieden said, acknowledging that a travel advisory can seem to penalize localities, like Miami, that have done a better job of identifying Zika cases.

According to CNN, the Centers for Disease Control has reported 1,825 cases of Zika through last Friday, including 322 cases in Florida.

The lives of babies who are born with the Zika virus are not less “worthy of the protection” of the law than any other child – and they should not be aborted, said Senator Marco Rubio.

In Florida, Gov. Rick Scott declared an emergency as Zika showed up in several counties, including the Tampa Bay area. The CDC has decided not to expand the travel advisory to all of Miami-Dade County, despite some groups calling the current warning insufficient.

Officials believe the epicenter of the locally transmitted cases of Zika in Florida was a 1-square-mile area in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami known for its trendy restaurants, bars and shops. The damage is irreversible and infants born with the illness will suffer its effects for the rest of their lives.
