Travelers have booked fewer hotel rooms in downtown Miami, and leisure airfares to the greater Miami area have inched down in the weeks since the Zika virus was detected there. The real concern is preventing the spread of Zika to those in fragile health or women who are pregnant or hoping to get pregnant.

The Zika (ZEE’-ka) virus was first discovered in monkey in Uganda in 1947 – its name comes from the Zika forest where it was first discovered.

For women who are not pregnant and males, testing the compounds in clinical trials will take a minimum of 1 to 2 years, said study co-author Dr. Wei Zheng.

They said the drug compounds can both both stop Zika from replicating in the body and from damaging the crucial fetal brain cells that lead to birth defects in newborns. On Friday, August 26, 2016, the FDA amended its blood collection guidance, stating that all blood donation in U.S. states and territories be tested for Zika virus infection, to ensure the safety of the nation’s blood supply.

“We focused on compounds that have the shortest path to clinical use”.

Tang and researcher Hongjun Song of Johns Hopkins explained repurposing already-approved drugs is a quicker alternative than developing a new medicine.

“Wear long shirts and long trousers, use insect repellent, change birdbaths, and make sure there are no old tires or standing water near (your) home”, she said. As of Monday, the state documented 588 residents with infections, including 75 pregnant women.

Most people with Zika don’t have any symptoms (“asymptomatic”) and are unlikely to realize they’re infected, according to the CDC.

They also worked whether given before or after exposure to the virus.

The other compound is emricasan, a pan-caspase inhibitor that blocked Zika-induced increases in caspase-3 activity and protected human cortical neuroprogenitor cells. Hearing Loss in Infants with Microcephaly and Evidence of Congenital Zika Virus Infection – Brazil, November 2015-May 2016.

“Don’t forget, this is just what we’ve seen in the lab”, Rathore said.

That report, published online August 24 in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved a baby boy born in January to a woman in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
