CBI arrests top Delhi IAS officer for seeking bribe

The CBI on Tuesday arrested a Principal Secretary in the Delhi authorities for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2.2 lakh from the proprietor of a agency that provides safety guards and different manpower for clearing pending payments.

Senior government official Sanjay Pratap Singh was suspended from his post on Wednesday after the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested him and his assistant the before for taking a bribe of Rs 2.2 lakh. The agency has found eight expensive properties – three in Noida, two in Greater Noida, two in Gurgaon and one in Safdarjung Enclave, all in high-end societies, from Singh from which he was getting rental income running into several lakhs. Fixed deposit receipts of over Rs one crore were found during searches yesterday. Sources claimed the locker opened was jointly in the name of Singh, a 1984-batch IAS of AGMUT cadre, and his wife, added the PTI report.

Earlier during the day, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the government had been keeping an eye for long on the arrested bureaucrat, but there was no evidence against him. He said the government had its eye on some “cutting-edge” officers. The arrested IAS officer is also an executive committee member of the elite Gymkhana Club in New Delhi.

“The assistant delivered the money to his vehicle, which was intercepted by the CBI outside his office and the officer was nabbed with the bribe amount”, said a CBI official. Singh reportedly asked for Rs 2.2 lakh in the first installment and instructed the firm owner to give the money to his assistant, Ramesh Kumar.
