However, with the registration ongoing until October 31, The Guardian investigations showed that bank customers were more about linking their accounts to the BVN than fresh enrollment.
Aku, who spoke at the end of the 324th meeting of the bankers’ committee in Lagos, said there was no going back on the new deadline set by CBN for customers to obtain their BVN.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria wishes to warn individuals and the general public that those messages are meant to lure bank account holders to reveal their personal details with which the fraudsters could use to defraud them, ” it said.
The CBN extended the deadline by four months, till October 31, 2015, to allow more people register.
According to Vanguard, less than half of the 52 million bank customers have been registered.
The extension of the deadline was to enable banks provide more facilities to enhance seamless enrolment of customers both within the country and overseas.
They, however, hailed the Central Bank initiative on the BVN exercise, as they agreed with the need to check trends in the banking system, in order to ensure sanity while clamping down on corruption and fraud.

“It is evident that there has been less pressure in banking halls across the country which goes to buttress the fact that a greater percentage of account holders have been enrolled with the exception of those yet to link their accounts to their BVN”, the CBN added.
