CC Sabathia: Sabathia not guaranteed spot in rotation

This all comes off of a Yankees team that is still licking their wounds from a Wild Card loss against the Houston Astros.

A few days ago, Brian Cashman shocked Yankees Universe when he said he was open to trading everyone on the roster, including Gregory Bird, Luis Severino and Aaron Judge.

“We’re going to have to see how the roster shakes out”. I’m not sure how long the Yankees have been doing this, but I’ve been on the beat since 2009 and it certainly seems like Girardi and David Cone have been there every year.

It’s highly unlikely that Daniel Murphy will play for the Mets in 2016. Obviously I like the guys on our club.

“Listen, we got knocked out of the playoffs after one game. It will be to win our division”. “I think if we did any changing there, it would be seeking more balance on both sides of the ball”.

Girardi acknowledged the club’s need for a right-handed hitter, something that became glaring after Mark Teixeira was lost to injury. You have two teams, there are high expectations moving forward, which I think is great.

Miller was nothing short of brilliant in first season with the Yankees and first season as a full-time closer. That quartet enjoyed rebound campaigns in 2015, and CC Sabathia’s encouraging September (a 2.17 ERA in five starts) has Cashman cautiously optimistic the big left-hander can contribute more than he has the three prior seasons – even as he wouldn’t assert that Sabathia owns a spot in the Yankees’ starting rotation. Girardi said of Sabathia, “I have (spoken to him). He sounds great, obviously, proud of how he stepped up and when he got help and he was pitching really well at the end of the season for us and, hopefully, this continues to help and he has a great season for us next year”.

Girardi described Masahiro Tanaka’s elbow operation to remove a bone spur as “that little, minor elbow surgery we’re going to have to deal with”, but noted the Yanks expect Tanaka ready for spring training. We were in a situation where he had to watch innings for certain guys.

He added that Sabathia’s treatment for alcoholism wouldn’t factor into the Yankees’ projection or assessment of him. It didn’t keep him from making a start. “It wasn’t what I expected at the end of the year, you know, I didn’t go into the last week of the season saying “I knew he needed surgery” because I didn’t”.

“We’ve had ownership that’s been massively supportive of this franchise forever, and so if there are any constraints, they would be based on prior-year commitments that we’re pregnant with and we’ll ride through”. It’s not easy, you know, the first time you do it, it’s actually somewhat stressful.

Seeing the Mets roar through the postseason to the World Series won’t necessarily provide a pinstriped carrot to the other team in town, Joe Girardi says. “Has played extremely well in the Fall League”. “Our guys are motivated from within”. “It doesn’t mean I’d do anything but if the Dutch never asked the Indians for Manhattan you’d be living in New Jersey”.

“The play on the field determines who’s playing the latest and who’s talked about the most”.
