Marcin Iwinski, CEO of CDPR (CD Projekt Red), spoke at this years infoShare where he shared plenty of valuable lessons that he and the team learned while working on the game, but this time, he told us who he thinks the top three gaming developers are as of now. It has been pirated, but Iwinski points out that many of those pirates have come back to purchase the game when they can afford it. Also, the regular free content drops for the title have encouraged gamers to buy a copy.

“Funnily enough, the more we proceed this way, the more we see them again on forums and Reddit and whatnot, we see that there is a guy saying “hey where can I download Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from?’ And then there is 10 people bashing them, ‘Oh you fucko, do not download the game”. So, on day one, you could download the game from GOG, and give it to a friend (enemy as well)…and still we sold near to 10 million units across all 3 platforms. That proof comes in the form of development studio CD Projekt, owner of GOG.com and creators of The Witcher series. Well, Iwinski now had the chance to name those top three game developers according to their perception.

Add to that a growing library of games on the also DRM-free GOG.com and you have a thriving business in the games sector without any use of DRM.

“We can not force people to buy things”.

Did you pirate The Witcher 3?

“We released [The Witcher 3] without any copy protection”, Iwiński says, via Kotaku. For example, we have lower prices in Russian Federation.

Since it is a bigger game, they would probably need more time to work on the details. We don’t like when people steal our product but we’re not going to chase them and put them in prison.
