The virus – mainly spread by through mosquito bites – causes mild illness or no symptoms in most people. Not just with pregnant women, but also with women of childbearing age, and now potentially with men who could be concerned about passing on any virus to a partner at home. The CDC says two other women gave birth to healthy babies and two are still pregnant.

“I dare to write you because I’m a resident in Colombia and here the Zika virus is a major problem, although the health authorities haven’t recognized it. I want to ask for help because I’m overcome by fear that my baby will be born sick”. The CDC has not released the location or identification of this family but the Hawaii Department of Health reported a case of a baby born in Oahu with microcephaly in January. To minimize risks of complications, public health officials recommend that pregnant women or women wanting to get pregnant, follow CDC guidance to prevent Zika infections. Among the women who had miscarriages, abortions, and the birth of child with microcephaly all experienced their symptoms during the first trimester. When she was 20 weeks pregnant, she learned from an ultrasound that her fetus was suffering from severe brain abnormalities.

All of the women had traveled somewhere in the Zika zone: American Samoa, Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico, or Samoa.

Those destinations are among the 30 places now on the CDC’s travel alert. This is in line with existing recommendations for pregnant women to postpone travel to areas where the virus is being transmitted.

There are now three confirmed Zika cases in Iowa, state public health officials said Friday.

Men who live in or travel to areas where Zika is spreading are advised to abstain from sex or use condoms consistently and properly. “If you have a male partner who goes to the Olympics, you may be at risk for sexual transmission“.

Across the US thousands of college students, members of faith organizations, healthcare professionals and others are now planning spring trips to warmer locations for fun or charity work.

The Centers for Disease Control is now able to test for Zika virus and is making this testing available through state health departments.

Research also is underway into a possible link between Zika and a paralyzing condition in adults called Guillain-Barre.
