CDC Director: ‘Essentially out of money’ to fight Zika
“The fact that we have identified a fourth Zika-positive mosquito pool in Miami Beach serves as further confirmation that we must continue our proactive and aggressive approach to controlling the mosquito population, including our recent decision to begin aerial spraying in combination with larvicide treatment by truck”, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez said in a statement. Freiden said that the two localized mosquito-borne outbreaks in Miami are “quite hard to control”, adding that the mosquitoes that spread Zika “are the cockroach of mosquitoes”.

The City of Miami Beach hosted an emergency workshop to discuss our ongoing efforts to keep our residents and visitors safe from the Zika virus. Despite the growing number of Zika cases in NY and throughout the country, Congress left for summer recess without enacting bipartisan legislation to help fight the virus.
Of Florida’s 56 non-travel-related Zika cases, 11 have been traced to Miami Beach and 29 to Wynwood.
In this photo taken July 13, 2016, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Frieden, the head of the government’s fight against the Zika virus said that “we are now essentially out of money” and warned that the country is “about to see a bunch of kids born with microcephaly” in the coming months. Of those diagnosed, 84 were pregnant women, according to health officials.
President Obama in February requested $1.9 billion to fight Zika, but Republicans controlling Congress acted slowly on the request. “Zika is real, and while we don’t understand it fully, that is not a reason to dismiss its impact”, Curry said during a commission meeting Wednesday. Democrats objected and blocked the $1.1 billion measure.
Dr. Tom Frieden offered that assessment to a group of reporters as Congress began negotiations on a stopgap spending bill that’s also meant to include long-delayed money to battle Zika.
Since then, Zika has spread more widely, and frustration is mounting from lawmakers representing affected areas.
Most of the state’s cases to date are travel-related, meaning people got the infection while traveling outside of the country.
