Cech ‘the keeper Arsenal need to win title’

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has backed Wojciech Szczesny to make an impact at the Emirates when he returns from his loan spell at AS Roma, as per Goal.

Barton believes Mourinho though would never have allowed the Czech Republic global to join Arsenal if he thought it would damage Chelsea’s chances.

After a strong end to last season and the retention of the FA Cup, many in the media talked up the Gunners’ title credentials ahead of the new campaign, however, after an opening day defeat against West Ham United, it appears doubts are beginning to surface.

But despite being “surprised” by Cech’s display, Lehmann thinks the 33-year-old will go on to have a “fantastic season”.

“But sometimes it takes a while to adapt to a new club, particularly when you are coming from a major enemy like Chelsea“.

The Poland global suffered a huge decline in form last term as he kept just three clean sheets in the first half of the season – five fewer than Ospina and even Cech, who made just seven appearances for Chelsea, kept five. “That could spur him on to play a fantastic season for Arsenal”.

Charlie Nicholas has warned Arsenal that they have to improve defensively if they are to be considered realistic challengers for the Premier League title.

“It depends on him”.

“But Petr Cech is one of the greatest keepers ever”.

Cech is going to struggle in every game where Arsenal’s defence drops deep and invites the pressure onto him, but his form should improve as he plays with the backline more and their understanding gets better.
