Celebrating 25 Years of ADA

It’s now been a quarter-century since the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed, and dozens turned out to celebrate the landmark law in Reading on Friday.

Under Gov. Nixon, significant strides have been made toward greater inclusiveness and opportunities for Missourians with disabilities. “It allows person who have disabilities to work toward the goals that they have personally established for themselves”.

They say most disabled people do want to work, and the key is connecting those looking for a career with jobs that fit their abilities. In 2012, NCD released Deinstitutionalization: Unfinished Business and accompanying toolkit which provided a practical roadmap for community living and integration.

In 2010, Gov. Nixon created the Partnership for Hope, which provides home- and community-based services to Missourians with developmental disabilities and their families.

“Twenty five years ago the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, a historic piece of legislation that advanced civil rights for millions of Americans with disabilities”. Since enactment of the ADA in 1990, NCD has continued to play a leading role in crafting disability policy, and advising the President, Congress and other federal agencies on disability policies, programs, and practices.
