Celebrating the Eid in multicultural India
In the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha occurs on the 10th day of the Dhu al-Hijjah and is also the third day of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

Eid al-Adha, which translates to “the festival of sacrifice”, commemorates the sacrifice of the prophet Abraham, said Anwer Ahmed, accounting professor and faculty representative of the Muslim Students’ Association.
Today, Muslims all over the world celebrate Eid al-Adha.
This day is celebrated as Eid when Ibrahim showed his willingness to sacrifice his son for God.
Organizers said such peaceful gatherings are important not only to bring the Muslim community together, but to help combat recent anti-Islamic sentiments.
“So this is the day of unity with those people who do not believe in Islam but definitely respect the prophets of almighty God”.
The animal sacrifice on this day is known as ‘Qurbani.’ Those who can afford to buy an animal, slaughter it, divide, keep some for the family, and the rest is distributed to the poor.
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has also wished “Eid Mubarak” to all Muslims.
Muslims also distribute halal meat amongst friends, family and people in need as an additional component to the religious celebration.
President Obama stressed America’s commitment to welcoming refugees and immigrants in his message marking Eid al-Adha.
Some Muslims choose to make the pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, and are expected to perform two rituals – Umrah and Hajj.
The “Festival of Sacrifice” is celebrated by approx.
Ruweda Hussein, a pre-nursing freshman, has big expectations for the celebration of this year’s Eid al-Adha.
