Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe called the shooting, which killed two journalists, a “senseless tragedy”. “I continue to keep the WDBJ family as well as Vicki Gardner, who was wounded this morning, in my thoughts and prayers”.

Police have cordoned off the area surrounding Bridgewater Plaza and schools in the area in lockdown.

A reporter and cameraman from WDBJ TV in Roanoke, Va., were shot and killed today during a live broadcast, the television station’s general manager confirmed in an on-air statement. The killer, Vester Flanagan, a former employee of the same TV station, was chased across the state and died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds in a Northern Virginia hospital.

Roanoke Carilion memorial Hospital issued a statement Wednesday following the shooting of three people at Smith Mountain Lake.

The lake is home to residents and recreational businesses, and the water in Smith Mountain Lake passes through hydroelectric generators to provide electricity for the region, the dam project’s website says.
