Celebrities, politicians saddened by author Harper Lee’s death
Lee remained, to the end, immune to the blandishments of worldwide fame, which enveloped her in 1960 with the publication of her first novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Senator Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, and Senator Richard Shelby, a Republican from Lee’s home state of Alabama, both praised the Pulitzer Prize winning Lee as a great author. It won the Academy Award for best picture in 1963 while Gregory Peck, who played Atticus and would become Lee’s good friend, was named best actor.
“Rest in peace, Harper Lee”.
Even then, she didn’t say much. She didn’t write the theatrical version of To Kill a Mockingbird and therefore never retained the rights to it. Those belong to Dramatic Publishing Company, a 131-year-old music and theater publishing house in IL owned by Christopher Sergel, the grandson of Mockingbird’s original playwright. And she stayed that way, even as the anniversary celebrations noisily proceeded throughout the nation.
“Laura and I are grateful for Harper Lee and her matchless contributions to humanity and to the character of our country”, he said of his wife. The story has also been adapted into a successful stage show.
Harper Lee, author of the beloved novel “To Kill a Mockingbird“, has died. She lives in a world where there aren’t easy answers, and where finding the goodness in people isn’t always a simple task.
Lee’s only other novel was the 2015 work “Go Set a Watchman”, which continued the story of “Mockingbird“, centering on an adult Scout. He also was the model for the character Dill in Mockingbird.
Robert Duvall, who portrayed Boo Radley in the 1962 film, told The Hollywood Reporter: “Harper Lee was a fine person and a wonderful writer”.
The unpublished book is a crime story called “The Reverend” based on a true story involving a pastor who killed three people and was acquitted of murder, said Mr Flynt, a professor at Auburn University who has known Lee for more than 30 years.
The head of HarperCollins US, Michael Morrison also released a statement.
“I hoped for a little, but I got rather a whole lot and in some ways this was just about as frightening as the quick, merciful death I’d expected”, she said, joking about her expectation the novel would be a critical flop. “I’m very sad at her loss”. She will be fondly remember by many. “We have lost a great writer, a great friend and a beacon of integrity”.
Lee died in her sleep at age 89 on Friday, her family confirmed.

In 1959, when the rewritten novel passed muster, Ms. Lee expressed her relief in a letter to Ms. Williams. But Alice angrily denied Capote’s claims that her mother had tried to drown Harper at age 2. In a matter of pages, (spoiler alert!) one finds out that Atticus has Rheumatoid arthritis, Jem is dead and Scout is increasingly disillusioned, fighting against different perceptions of her childhood town and her naïve seemingly omniscient and ever-just father.
