Celery products pulled from Montana stores due to E. coli outbreak

More than 70 items were listed in the recall notice following a multi-state E. coli outbreak originally linked to Costco chicken salad. Among the products recalled were chicken salad, macaroni salad and celery sticks from various companies.

The Montana Department of Health and Human Services said Taylor Farms Pacific, which supplies the ingredients suspected to be behind the outbreak, has recalled the celery products, which were at Costco, Albertsons, Safeway, Sam’s Club and Walmart stores. The products, which were sold at 500 stores in eight states with “sell by” dates of Dec 3 through Dec 6., have been removed from stores.

Health officials urge anyone who recently purchased the product to throw it away.

Symptoms of an E. coli infection include stomach cramps, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea.

Last month, E. coli was found in chicken salad sold at Issaquah, Washington-based retailer Costco. Sometimes there is also vomiting and and a fever of less than 101˚F. Those at highest risk include children, seniors and those with compromised immune systems. As of November 19, a total of 45 people across six states have been affected by E.coli after consuming a common meal/ingredient from Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. In the Costco E.coli outbreak has led to five hospitalizations and two of them have developed a type of kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Illnesses were reported in California, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, Utah, Virginia and Washington.
